LP Provider Comparison?

As a secondary school looking to get on board with a Learning Platform, is anyone aware (or able to create) a simple table which compares the various providers in a simple to access manner? HAving got fairly excited (and encouraged by our county) to go with Studywiz we then find that they may not provide all the features we were hoping for. Here's a comment from the EduGeek forum:

"I'd just like some comments from anyone who has StudyWiz.

Our authority is planning to use this and from what I've seen so far its a poor effort.

No live MIS integration - no updates for class lists (rotations etc.),
pupils won't have their timetable, parents won't be able to see
attendance etc.

No mark sheets

E-mail internal only - that might be OK for pupils but it means staff
will have to check two lots of mail. We can't get some to check one lot!

No web interface without paying extra

Getting documents into tasks seems to be a long winded process.

Overall the whole thing looks less than intuative and a lot of staff will just give up on it."

HELP

Re: LP Provider Comparison?

I am about to do this task as part of an action to strengthen head Teachers' understanding (and hence their committment, as identified as an enabler) across our parnership. We have a collaborative LP space as well as our own school space to support the delivery of course, including Diplomas acorss the partnership. I am very willing to share when I have finished it.

if you want to visit, I also host lots of school visits to see what we are doing and you would be very welcome.

Re: LP Provider Comparison?

I have to admit that most schools and LAs are between a rock and a hard place at the moment when it comes to Learning Platforms. They are pushed to procure on mass to get best value but then have to accept the limitations that are within the platform.

The best you can hope for is to see the roadmap for the product and guess at what the hold ups will be for MIS integration ... usually it will be the time and money involved in developing their own tools, or the cost of paying toe MIS supplier for integration. It is not a nice situation to be in.

Re: LP Provider Comparison?

We are rolling out Studywiz as the borough-wide learning platform, if you would like a chat with our implementation coordinator his contact details are as follows; Dave Gibson - dave.gibson@oldham.gov.uk and will be able to provide you with up to date information about MIS integration time scales etc.

Re: LP Provider Comparison?

The real problem with LP provider comparison is that you need to get past the suppliers statements about the platform - though that is of course the starting point - and don't restrict yourself just to the 'Becta list' suppliers, there have been major developments in the market and in platforms since then, with platforms such as Frog and Moodle that were not included in the list being implemented by many schools and LAs. You need to listen to what SLT people from other schools say.

The real question is how useable schools, teachers and pupils find the platforms in practice. This links strongly to how easily they can develop and change their platform as their needs develop. And getting answers to this question is made problematic by the very diverse ways schools use their learning platforms, each according to their own educational approach, nature of community etc. You need to look at what lots of schools are doing, not rely on insight from only a few. But I am really surprised how open busy schools are to visits from other schools. You will find that some have even got to the point of setting up open days or running specific events for other schools to come and see their approach.

I can't speak for how other suppliers arrange for you to get this insight, but here at Frog we use a range of approaches (see http://www.frogtrade.com), including case studies, white papers, video clips, and awareness days where most of the presentations are by schools talking about how they use their Frog, not just 'product presentations'. We also have 'Frog Specialist Centre Schools', who have agreed to accept visits from other schools. People from these school are also quite often involved in other events - Harry French from Attleborough High School is presenting at the Naace 'Implementing Your Learning Platform' day on 28th Nov (http://www.naace.org/events for details).

There is also an increasing amount of video around. I particularly recommend this vid of Domenic Volpe from Heaton Manor presenting to the Naace Conference Sep 07 - http://blip.tv/file/get/Learn4life-MakingAVLEWorkForYouInABusySchool570.mov - may take a while to load and it is 60 minutes, but full of invaluable advice.

Re: LP Provider Comparison?
(Sorry to follow on your heels again, Roger)

In my research into VLEs last year I identified some 35 different suppliers. Some built upon their strengths and track-record as MIS suppliers, some of the big names appeared to just update previous offerings but with a few more patches. Some, as content suppliers, attempted to 'wrap' their content within a form of VLE but without the integration that schools must deliver. Some appeared to base their solutions on HE practice, far removed from the sort of interface that children are used to.

One significant point that came out of my research was that a number of successful VLEs had evolved from years of previous network and learning platform usage in the schools, where all staff were familiar with LP policies and just the remote access and refined MIS reporting were the new 'bits'.

At one point I tried to establish a table of comparisons but that task became increasingly futile. Every product had different strengths and weaknesses. Some came with content, others appeared to resist the installation of existing valued packages. But then, as in my previous procurement work, I soon came to the conclusion that there was no other way but to investigate a range of products, see demonstrations at the suppliers' head offices, obtain 'demo' access and spend plenty of time with on-line trials, visit many schools and really work hard at defining and refining what you really want, and don't accept 'NO' as an acceptable answer.

However, one of my chief concerns is that either when upgrading a previous system or in starting with a new product, the same problems often arrose in installing content. Many teachers (and university lecturers) felt that all they had to do was to upload their previous lesson plans and paper-based resources (which invariably took much much longer than anticipated). Others looked to using shareable materials but without really getting involved with the 'ownership' of the teaching and learning. If one considers the potential for remote, anytime, anyplace, anyhow (handheld?) access of learning resources and activities, surely this should fundamentally change the way we present learning activities?

Last of all, can I make a plea that parents and the children are involved from an early stage in the introduction of the VLE? After all, remote access will not happen if parents refuse to allow home access. If parents are to take an interest in their child(ren)'s work, if investment in computers in the home is to happen, if collaboration and family mentoring are to become common then the parents need to be on our side and supportive of the VLE policies that are mutually agreed.
