Welcome to the collaboration space for Becta’s Home Access programme.

The Home Access programme aims to narrow the gap between families that have access to learning technology at home and those who don’t. There are still significant numbers of learners who lack access to computers and the internet at home, many of whom are excluded due to the cost. This disadvantages children from deprived families, both in terms of their education and from the wider social inclusion agenda perspective.

Becta, the government agency for technology in learning, are managing the delivery of the programme for the Government. The programme was rolled out nationally following an announcement from the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the Learning and Technology World Forum on 11 January 2010 and aims to benefit 270,000 households that currently lack access to computers and the internet by March 2011, including those with severe disabilities and Special Educational Needs.

This collaboration space acts as a platform for interested parties to share their views, engage in conversations with Becta and the wider education community, download resources and interact with the aim of making the programme a success.

Your input to this area is vital. Please don’t hesitate to post your views, new discussion topics or ask any questions that you may have.

Worth coming back for in Home Access

Posted by Kieronh Aug 16, 2010

The Our Home Access website is proving popular with our families, who appear to be coming back time and time again. It’s been designed to provide plenty of help to those taking their first steps into the online world and give them access to a wealth of resources that will help them learn more effectively, access public services more easily and make the most of what the internet has to offer.

There is also a new Assistive Technology and SEN section which covers in more detail the three types of Assistive Technology software included on all Home Access packages. It includes links to video tutorials and online resources for families with children with Special Educational Needs as well. It's accessible from the Our Home Access homepage and should provide plenty of help and advice to families with the challenges they face.

In the last month that we have statistics for, the average number of visits to the site was around 30,000 per day, with return visits to the site totalling in excess of 2,230,000! And it isn’t just people familiar with the site that are paying it a visit. New users made up more than 8 per cent, or more than 200,000, of the site’s visitors overall for the period.

Since the launch of the site in late December it’s received more than 3 million visits, statistics that show that families really are treating it as Their Home Access.

Read all about it in Home Access

The launch of Home Access packages with Assistive Technology has been generating a good amount of press coverage. Standing out from the crowd was a personal blog written by a mother of a child with a severe disability that runs in The Sun.

It relates her experience when she met one of the country’s leading campaigners for disability rights, the actor Brian Rix. You can read what he thinks about disability issues in general and how technology can make a real difference to what children with disabilities can achieve here.

We’ve also had excellent coverage on local and national radio, including an appearance from AbiltyNet’s Nigel Lewis on Radio 4’s You and Yours talking about the Home Access Assistive Technology project, and plenty of coverage in regional and sectoral press.
